mjbteh.jpg (2997 bytes)Mara Jade: By the Emperor’s Hand is about how Mara Jade must destroy the leader of Black Nebula. In the very start of the comic book Mara is showing her skills so that Darth Vader can learn who she is. Then Mara Jade is sent on a mission to Tatooine at Jabba’s Palace to destroy Luke Skywalker, which as you guess does not happen. After her disappointing failure Mara is sent to the planet Svivren to kill the crime lord Dequc of Black Nebula who is trying to revive the Black Sun organization. Mara almost fulfills this mission but to her surprise she doesn’t actually kill Dequc but it wasn’t actually Dequc but one of his henchmen sent there to act like he was Dequc. Soon after she finds out that she didn’t complete her mission Emperor Palpatine makes contact with Mara Jade and the events happening near Endor. Moments later Emperor Palpatine dies and Mara Jade is captured my Ysanne Isard and imprisoned. Isard is not sure who this Mara Jade is so she expects the worse. At first she is in despair then figures out how to get out of her cell by convincing an Imperial Officer to take her out of her cell to a computer terminal to enter the secret computer codes of the Emperor. Mara has different plans and escapes the Imperial Palace and heads off planet. Once off planet Mara waitresses a local cantina until some Black Nebula people come to the cantina and want to be paid. After the cantina incident she makes the choice to go hunting for Dequc again. Once she finds out where Dequc is hiding Mara goes to the planet right away. On this planet she goes to the casino predicting that it somehow related to Black Nebula. Mara uses the force to win at spinner pit and soon finds herself talking to the head of the casino that is in contact with Dequc often. They couldn’t find any trace of a hidden device that would rig the game. Mara says she is here as a sells-person selling devices that will rig the games. Mara needs to meet Dequc in order for her to sell her products to Black Nebula so they can detect them. Mara Jade finally is taken to Dequc’s head headquarters and that is where Mara finally completes her mission.

I would like to say this is a very well written comic book but why shouldn’t it be when it is written by Tim Zahn and Mike Stackpole. Mara Jade: By the Emperor’s Hand has some of the best art I have ever seen in a comic book done by Carlos Ezquerra.
